Hydrocotyle sp. ‘Japan,’ a variant of Hydrocotyle tripartita from Southeast Asia, is a favorite among aquascapers due to its delicate appearance and rapid growth. Known for its creeping or overhanging growth pattern, this plant thrives under high light, CO2 injection, and an abundant supply of nutrients. In optimal conditions, its growth can be accelerated and made more compact by gently pressing the carpet during aquarium maintenance. This technique encourages the plant to form a dense, lush foreground, ideal for aquascaping.
For those with lower light setups, Hydrocotyle sp. ‘Japan’ will still grow, albeit more slowly and with a more upright growth habit. However, to achieve the best carpet formation and compact growth, higher lighting is recommended. Its fast-growing nature and versatility make it an excellent choice for creating dynamic, textured aquascapes in both small and large tanks.
