Staurogyne repens “Variegated” is a variation of the classic S. repens that features bright green leaves marbled with cream and white hues. Its compact growth under higher lighting and signature foliage add contrast and bushy texture to midground areas of a planted aquarium.
Like the standard form, this aquatic plant grows low and gradually forms dense groups when regularly trimmed and replanted. With good lighting and stable water conditions, S. repens is a fantastic choice for creating a natural transition between carpeting plants like Monte Carlo or dwarf hairgrass and taller background plants in planted aquariums.
While generally considered an approachable plant to grow, variegated forms tend to develop more slowly due to reduced chlorophyll. Start with medium lighting levels, dose a complete aquarium plant fertilizer, and inject CO2 to encourage healthier, more compact growth. In setups where lighting is too low, the plant may become leggy, indicating that light levels should be increased.
Pairs Well With
– Fine-textured carpeting plants to contrast its broader, variegated leaves
– Stone-based hardscape layouts like Seiryu Stone or Iwagumi aquascapes where its compact growth can form bushy groups along the base
