Microsorum pteropus ‘Windelov’, more commonly known as simply Java Fern Windelov, is a popular variation for planted aquariums and aquascaping. This aquatic fern is often picked by beginner aquarists thanks to its easy care and bold green color. This family of plants are very versatile, provide great coverage, fill empty space in layouts well, and can handle considerable amounts of neglect. Its versatility makes it suitable for aquariums, terrariums, vivariums, and paludariums. Windelov is easily recognized for its split ends and bushy appearance. Recently reclassified asLeptochilus pteropus, this plant is still widely known in the aquarium hobby as Microsorum pteropus.
Java Fern plants are epiphytic and will grow happily when attached to aquarium driftwood, aquascaping stones, or any aquarium decor. We recommend providing it with clean water, low to medium lighting, and good flow for starters. A quality aquatic plant fertilizer paired with CO2 injection will be beneficial in the long run and can help promote quicker, bushier growth. Propagation is easy and straightforward; simply cut or pull apart rhizomes to be replanted/reattached.
