Each piece is all natural and sustainably harvested, and unlike much of the generic Malaysian driftwood it resembles, this Talawa root is selected to be low in tannins, so it won’t significantly tea-stain or cloud your water. Aquascaping Tip:A piece this size is a centerpiece — set it as the dominant structure and build the rest of the scape around it. The craggy surface and crevices are perfect for wedging in plants and attachingAnubias,Java fern, or moss, and the hollows make natural caves and shaded retreats that fish and shrimp love. It also crosses over beautifully into paludariums, where the exposed root can rise above the waterline, and into terrariums as a sturdy climbing branch for reptiles.

Mangrove root is a dense, durable wood that holds up for years underwater, and its dark, rugged tone contrasts strikingly against bright plants and substrate. Preparation & What to Expect:Give the root a thorough rinse to clear any dust from transit, then soak it until waterlogged so it stays put; a large piece may want a week or two of soaking, and you can weigh it down or boil smaller sections to speed things along. Tannin release is low for this wood, but a little initial tint is normal — water changes or activated carbon clear it quickly if you want it gone. As with any new wood, a bit of soft white biofilm may appear early on; it’s harmless, shrimp graze it, and it disappears as the tank settles.
