Watersprite

Watersprite, botanically Ceratopteris thalictroides, is one of the fastest-growing and most versatile aquatic ferns in the planted aquarium hobby. Its finely divided, feathery leaves create a lush, full presence whether planted in the substrate as a background plant or left to float freely at the water surface. The rapid growth rate of Watersprite makes it exceptional at absorbing excess nutrients from the water column — a practical benefit in addition to its genuine aesthetic appeal.

Planting tip:Watersprite should be attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape with the rhizome or roots fully exposed — never buried in substrate. Use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.

Watersprite can be grown in two completely different ways: planted in the substrate where it develops a root system and grows upright with divided fronds, or floating freely at the surface where it grows more vigorously in a spreading, low-profile mat of feathery leaves. Floating growth tends to be faster and creates beneficial shading and natural fry cover. Propagation is effortless — small plantlets develop on mature fronds and can be removed and established independently.

This easy plant grows in moderate lighting with CO₂ optional. Temperatures between 68 and 82°F and a pH of 6.5 to 7.5 provide comfortable conditions. As a fast grower, regular fertilization keeps up with its nutrient demands and maintains vigorous growth. In tanks with excess nutrients, Watersprite can help restore balance through its rapid nutrient uptake.

In the aquascape, Watersprite provides fast, full background coverage or natural floating surface vegetation depending on how it is managed. The feathery leaves create natural shelter for fry and shrimp, and the floating colony creates a beautiful, dappled light effect throughout the aquarium. In planted tanks struggling with new-tank syndrome or nutrient imbalances, it is one of the fastest and most practical remedial plants available.

Watersprite is a classic, versatile, and genuinely useful aquatic fern that serves both aesthetic and practical roles in the planted aquarium. Fast, adaptable, and reliably beautiful in any growing mode.
