Staurogyne repens is a vibrant, hardy foreground plant native to the River Rio Cristalino in the southern Amazon. Its compact, fresh green foliage thrives in strong light and nutrient-rich substrates, allowing it to develop a dense root system. Although CO2 injection enhances its growth, it’s not essential. Under low light, the plant tends to grow upright, so maintaining bright light helps it stay low and spread horizontally.

For optimal, carpet-like growth, trim upright stems to a maximum of 2 inches before planting. These cuttings can be used for propagation by planting them closely in the substrate. Regular trimming promotes bushy, creeping growth, but if you prefer taller formations, the plant can also be left to grow vertically and shaped like topiary. Cutting back longer stems selectively encourages branching and keeps the plant’s growth compact and shrub-like.

Staurogyne repens shines in aquascaping, particularly in Iwagumi-style layouts, where it fills gaps between rocks or creeps down from higher surfaces, mimicking cushion plants in the mountains. Its light green leaves create a striking contrast with other low-growing plants and combine beautifully with rocks or driftwood, enhancing the overall visual appeal of an aquarium.
