Keeping Sailfin Tangs in an Aquarium
The Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma veliferum) is a popular and stunning fish species that can be kept in a saltwater aquarium. Their striking appearance and hardiness make them a great choice for both novice and experienced aquarium keepers. As a bonus, they are also MAC certified, meaning they were sustainably bred and produced for the aquarium hobby.
Aquarium Requirements
Sailfin Tangs require a spacious tank with plenty of swimming room. A minimum tank size of 125 gallons is recommended, with plenty of live rock and hiding spaces. They prefer a warm water temperature between 72-78°F and a pH range of 8.1-8.4. Good water quality is essential, so frequent water changes and filtration are a must.
Diet
Sailfin Tangs are herbivores and require a diet rich in vegetable matter. They should be fed a variety of seaweed, spirulina, and frozen or fresh marine algae. They may also eat meaty foods, such as brine shrimp or mysis shrimp, but these should be used sparingly.
Behavior and Compatibility
Sailfin Tangs are generally peaceful, but may become territorial with other tangs or fish of a similar shape or color. They may also nip at soft corals, so caution should be taken when introducing them to a reef tank. They do well with other peaceful community fish and invertebrates.
Fun Fact
Sailfin Tangs can change their coloration depending on their mood or environment. When stressed, they may darken in color, and when relaxed, they may lighten or brighten their colors.
