Sagittaria subulata, commonly known as the arrowhead plant, is a versatile and undemanding foreground option for aquariums. Native to the eastern USA and South America, it thrives in both fresh and brackish waters, often forming extensive meadow-like stands in river mouths. This popular aquarium plant is widely cultivated by large nurseries and readily available in aquarium stores.
Easy to care for, S. subulata has moderate light requirements and tolerates hard, alkaline water, making it suitable for various setups. While it flourishes without CO2 injection, adding it can enhance growth. For optimal results, use a nutrient-rich substrate or water with high concentrations of nitrates, phosphates, potassium, and trace elements. Be mindful of iron deficiency, as this can cause yellowing leaves; with intense lighting, you may also notice reddish tips on the leaves.
As a fast-growing plant, S. subulata propagates by runners, quickly forming a dense carpet that works well in the foreground or middle ground of your aquarium. Its grass-like texture can be beautifully complemented by other species like Anubias barteri var. nana and Glossostigma elatinoides, adding contrast and creating a more natural aesthetic. Elevate your aquatic landscape with the charming Sagittaria subulata!
