Sagittaria platyphylla

Sagittaria platyphylla, known as Broadleaf Sagittaria, is a robust and hardy North American aquatic plant from the southeastern United States producing broad, strap-like green leaves in a vigorous, spreading rosette. One of the more practical and beginner-friendly aquarium plants available — adaptable to a wide range of water conditions including alkaline water, and genuinely easy to grow without CO₂ or demanding lighting.

Care note:Sagittaria platyphylla is best grown in emersed or terrarium conditions with consistent humidity rather than fully submerged. Maintain temperatures of 68–82°F and a humid environment for healthy, vibrant growth.

Growing to 8 to 16 inches, Broadleaf Sagittaria is a natural midground to background plant for medium and larger aquariums. The broad leaves create natural shelter and bold, green background structure. It spreads via runners in established tanks. Nutrient-rich substrate or regular root tabs support the most vigorous, healthy growth.

This easy plant requires no CO₂ supplementation and grows in moderate lighting. Temperatures between 68 and 82°F and a pH of 6.5 to 7.5 provide comfortable conditions. As the chart notes it is also known as Broadleaf Sagittaria and is hardy and great for beginner tanks — both accurate points. Regular root feeding maintains the broad, healthy leaf production.

In the aquascape, Sagittaria platyphylla provides bold, broad-leaved midground to background structure that suits community tanks and beginner planted aquariums where easy, reliable green background coverage is needed. The broad leaves provide natural shelter for fish and create visual depth in the background zone. In North American biotope setups it is a botanically appropriate and naturally attractive background species.

Sagittaria platyphylla is a hardy, easy, and practically accessible North American background plant for beginner aquarists and community tanks. Its broad leaves, easy care, and adaptable nature make it one of the most reliably growing midground to background plants for a wide range of aquarium conditions.
