Red Lizard Whiptail Catfish

Red Lizard Whiptail Catfish(Rineloricariasp.) is one of the most visually striking loricariid catfish available for the planted aquarium. The body is a vivid brick-red to orange-red — an unusual and eye-catching color for a bottom-dwelling catfish — with the long, whip-like caudal filaments that give the species its common name. It lies completely flat against wood and rock surfaces, its outline so flat it seems almost two-dimensional against the substrate.

Feeding & Care Tip:Hikari Mini Algae Wafersplaced directly on wood or rock surfaces are the ideal staple — position them where the fish already rests. Supplement with blanched zucchini or cucumber slices weighted to the bottom.Hikari Sinking WafersandSera Vipachips Tropical Wafersprovide additional variety. Driftwood in the tank is important — these fish rasp wood as part of their normal feeding behavior.

Native to river systems of South America — the exact origin of captive-bred ‘Red Lizard’ stock is disputed, but the red coloration is a selectively developed aquarium strain rather than a specific wild locality form. WildRineloricariainhabit shallow, fast-moving streams with sandy substrate and submerged wood. Soft, slightly acidic water and excellent water movement replicate their natural habitat.

Males develop prominent odontodes — small bristle-like projections — along the sides of the snout during breeding condition, making sexing straightforward. They are cave spawners; provide a piece of PVC pipe or a tight-fitting cave exactly sized to the fish. The male guards the eggs and fans them until hatching. Can be kept in pairs or small groups with adequate territory.

The Red Lizard Whiptail is an exceptional planted tank catfish — its flat profile means it never disturbs plants or substrate, it stays on surfaces rather than digging, and the vivid red coloration is genuinely unusual among bottom dwellers. Driftwood in the aquarium is strongly recommended both as a feeding surface and as essential territory.
