- Tank size:5 gallons minimum, 10+ gallons ideal. Bettas are NOT bowl fish — they need filtration, a heater, and stable water.
- Heater:Required. Bettas are tropical and stress in cool water.
- Filtration:Gentle. Sponge filters or baffled HOBs work best — their long fins drag in strong current.
- Aquascape:Live or silk plants, broadleaf species for resting near the surface, plus a betta hammock or floating leaf. Avoid sharp décor that could tear fins.
- Lid required:Bettas are notorious jumpers, especially when first introduced. A tight-fitting lid is non-negotiable.
- Diet:Carnivore. Offer high-quality betta pellets as the staple, with frozen or freeze-dried bloodworms and brine shrimp as treats 2–3 times per week. Feed 2–4 small meals per day; bettas overeat readily.

Compatibility
Best kept alonefor guaranteed safety, especially given the long fins of halfmoons (shortfins fare a little better in community settings). If you want tank mates in a 10+ gallon planted tank, consider peaceful nano species: ember tetras, harlequin rasboras, kuhli loaches, nerite snails, or amano shrimp.
Never combinewith: another male betta (will fight to the death), females (only safe in supervised breeding setups), fin-nippers like tiger barbs or serpae tetras, or any brightly colored long-finned fish like guppies (which males will mistake for rivals).

FAQ
What does “Red Dragon” mean?It’s a color pattern: a pale, opaque body overlaid with thick, metallic red scales. The “dragon” effect comes from iridescent scales that look like armor plating.
What’s the difference between shortfin and longfin?Shortfin (plakat) bettas have compact, athletic fins — closer to the wild form. Halfmoon shortfins still spread their caudal to 180° when flared, just without the trailing fin length of longfin varieties.
Can he live in a bowl?No. A 5-gallon filtered, heated tank is the minimum. Bowls don’t hold stable temperature or water chemistry.
Why does he build bubble nests?Male bettas build floating bubble nests as a natural breeding behavior. It’s a sign of a healthy, happy fish — not a sign that he needs a mate.
Do bettas really fight to the death?Two males in the same tank will absolutely fight, often fatally. Never house males together. Even females (in sororities) require a very specific setup and aren’t beginner-friendly.
