The Rosetail’s rose-petal fin edges are most spectacular in premium specimens where the branching is even and consistent across all fins. The Rosetail is a Halfmoon variant in which the fin rays branch excessively, creating a heavily ruffled, rose-petal effect along the edges of the fins. The branching produces an extraordinarily ornate appearance — each fin edge folded and layered like the petals of a rose. The Rosetail’s complex fin structure is visually spectacular but requires extra care: the highly branched fin edges are more prone to tearing and fin rot than smoother tail types. Clean water, low nitrates, and gentle flow are especially important.

In 1840, King Rama III gave specimens to Danish physician Theodore Cantor, who published the first Western scientific description. Bettas arrived in France in 1892, Germany in 1896, and reached San Francisco in 1910 via importer Frank Locke. It was not until 1927 that the first brightly colored, long-finned specimens reached the United States — transforming the fish from a foreign curiosity into the spectacular ornamental varieties the world knows today.
