Pogostemon helferi, known as ‘Downoi’ (little star) in Thailand, was discovered by aquarists near the Burma border. It thrives in fast-flowing rivers with limestone ground, growing on and between rocks, submerged during the rainy season and emerging with striking flower spikes in autumn and winter. Its unique star-shaped appearance makes it a captivating addition to any aquarium.
This Pogostemon species is relatively easy to care for, as long as specific conditions are met. It requires sufficient light (0.5-1+ watt per liter), moderate CO2, and regular fertilization, including nitrate, phosphate, potassium, magnesium, and particularly iron, which helps maintain its lush green leaf color. Without enough light, the plant may become elongated, and its leaves may turn yellowish.
Under proper light and with a nutrient-rich substrate, Pogostemon helferi produces numerous side shoots with small roots, quickly forming a dense carpet of foreground vegetation. It can also be attached to wood or rocks and is suitable for paludariums where it can grow both emersed and submersed. Propagation is simple—just trim below a leaf node and replant as you would with other stem plants.
