Pearl Weed (Hemianthus micranthemoides), famously used by Takashi Amano under the name “Pearl Grass” in his aquascapes, is a versatile plant known for its horizontal or slanted upright shoots. Unlike many stem plants, Pearl Weed forms groups that appear more natural and irregular, making it an excellent choice for creating dynamic aquascapes. It is fast-growing and relatively undemanding, though when CO2 is insufficient, its shoot tips may stop growing and grey lime deposits can form on the leaves. Additionally, it may react negatively to nitrate concentrations above 10 mg/l.
This plant thrives in moderate light but benefits from more intense lighting, developing a bushier, more compact form that is easier to manage and maintain as a carpet. Its ability to grow low and spread horizontally makes it ideal for creating lush, green carpets in the foreground of aquariums. To maintain its optimal growth, regular trimming and sufficient CO2 levels are recommended.
