Odessa Barb

Odessa Barb(Pethia padamya) is one of the most underappreciated barbs in the hobby — a genuinely spectacular fish that deserves far more attention than it receives. Males develop a vivid, wide horizontal scarlet-red stripe running the length of the silver body, flanked by rows of iridescent green-gold scale spots. The namepadamyais Burmese for ‘ruby.’ The species was kept in the hobby for decades before it was formally described in 2008.

Feeding & Care Tip:Hikari Micro PelletsandSera Vipan Tropical Flakesmake excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week withHikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried BloodwormsorHikari Vibra Bitesto enhance the vivid red lateral stripe. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.

Native to Myanmar (Burma) — described scientifically only in 2008 despite being known to aquarists since the 1970s, when it first appeared in Odesa, Ukraine, giving the fish its common name. Inhabits clear, moderately fast-flowing streams with good oxygenation. A robust and adaptable species.

Keep in groups of at least six with a mix of males and females. Males display their vivid red stripe most intensely when competing for female attention. Peaceful and suitable for community tanks with other moderately active, similarly sized fish. Not a fin-nipper.

Egg-scatterer. The Odessa Barb is a fish that rewards the aquarist who takes time to look — in good lighting with multiple males competing, the combination of vivid red stripe and iridescent scale spots creates a genuinely breathtaking display. One of the most underrated barbs available.
