Bolbitis heteroclita ‘Difformis,’ commonly known as Mini Bolbitis, is a compact variation of the tropical Asian fern Bolbitis heteroclita. Originally described as Edanyoa difformis, this plant originates from the Philippine island of Negros and has long been cultivated in horticulture. However, it has only recently gained popularity as an aquarium plant. With its delicate, parsley-like pinnate leaves and creeping rhizomes, it forms a lush, low-growing carpet, reaching a maximum height of about 2.75 inches when grown emersed.
This fern thrives best in moderately moist soil, making it an excellent choice for terrariums and paludariums. When grown submerged, it develops significantly smaller and coarser leaves, growing at an extremely slow pace. To successfully cultivate it underwater, attach the plant to lava rocks using thread or glue, as burying the rhizome can lead to rot. While challenging to grow fully submerged, Bolbitis heteroclita ‘Difformis’ adds unique texture and greenery to aquascapes, making it a sought-after plant for specialized setups.
