Microsorum pteropus ‘Trident’, also known as Java Fern Trident, is a popular aquarium plant used in aquascaping and terrariums. Like other Java Fern varieties, it’s easy to care for and maintains its appearance with very little effort. Its slender, deep green leaves branch out into multiple tips, giving it a more detailed, textured look compared to standard Java Fern.
Recently reclassified asLeptochilus pteropus, this plant is still widely known in the aquarium hobby as Microsorum pteropus. Its unique, forked growth creates a fuller appearance, making it a great choice for filling in sparse areas or adding contrast to broader-leaf plants in a layout.
Java Fern Trident is ideal for low tech planted aquariums and low light setups, making it a great option for beginners. As an epiphytic plant, it can be attached to driftwood, rocks, or aquarium decor using thread or glue. Be sure to keep the rhizome above the substrate to prevent rot.
When mature, propagation is simple—just cut or divide the rhizome and reattach as needed. With time, it will continue to grow into a dense, natural-looking cluster.
