Microsorum pteropus ‘Latifolia’, commonly known as Java Fern Latifolia, is a larger-growing variation of Java Fern with broad, ruffled leaves and rich green coloration. Its size and fuller texture make it a great choice for filling in open space in larger planted aquariums or terrariums.
Recently reclassified asLeptochilus pteropus, this plant is still widely known in the aquarium hobby as Microsorum pteropus. Like other Java Fern varieties, it is very hardy and easy to care for, making it a great option for beginners. It grows well in low to moderate lighting and adapts to a wide range of aquarium conditions.
As an epiphytic plant, it can be attached to driftwood, rocks, or aquarium decor using thread or glue. Its larger size makes it especially useful as a background plant or focal point in aquascapes where additional coverage is needed.
Be sure to keep the rhizome above the substrate to prevent rot. Propagation is simple and can be done by dividing the rhizome and reattaching as desired.
