Madagascar Rainbow

Madagascar Rainbow(Bedotia madagascariensis) is a unique and beautiful fish from Madagascar — the only rainbowfish in our lineup that is neither from New Guinea nor Australia. The warm amber-yellow body is accented by a vivid red to orange-red edge on the tail fin, creating a clean, elegant appearance. This species belongs to its own endemic Malagasy family and is a genuinely different fish from the Australian and Papuan rainbows.

Feeding & Care Tip:Sera Vipan Tropical FlakesandHikari Micro Pelletsmake excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week withHikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried BloodwormsorHikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp. Crush flakes for juveniles; soak pellets.

Native to the Nosivolo River and other eastern Madagascar rivers. Madagascar’s freshwater fish are among the most threatened in the world —B. madagascariensisis Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Aquarium populations are genuinely important for this species. It inhabits clear, fast-flowing streams and rivers with rocky substrate.

Keep in groups of at least six. This species appreciates slightly cooler water and good water movement more than most rainbowfish. Completely peaceful with other medium-sized community fish. Its unique Malagasy origin makes it a fascinating addition to a diverse community.

A well-planted aquarium with open swimming space in the center replicates the rainbowfish’s natural riverine habitat. These are active, fast-swimming fish that appreciate length more than height — a longer tank allows them to build up speed and display properly. Good filtration and regular partial water changes are important, as rainbowfish are sensitive to deteriorating water quality. Avoid very small or slow-moving tankmates that may be outcompeted at feeding time.
