Limnophila sp. “Belem” has been in the aquarium hobby for over 20 years but remains a rare find. Likely a variant of Limnophila aromatica, its exact origin is unclear, though it is believed to come from tropical Asia rather than Brazil. In its submerged form, it develops narrow, lanceolate leaves with serrated edges, displaying striking purplish-red blotches. The leaves can grow up to 2.5 inches long and 0.5 inches wide, while each stem can reach about 4 inches in width. It resembles Limnophila aromatica “Red”, but stands out with its lighter stems and distinct blotch patterns.
For optimal growth, this plant thrives under high lighting, soft to moderately hard water, and CO2 supplementation. A well-balanced supply of micro- and macronutrients is essential, along with stable temperatures between 72°F and 81°F. Like other stem plants, Limnophila sp. “Belem” is easily propagated through cuttings, making it a great option for aquascapers looking to expand their collection.
This vibrant species serves as a striking midground plant, reaching up to 12 inches in height. Its unique purple blotches add depth and contrast to any aquascape. Additionally, it can be grown emersed in well-lit paludariums, where it may produce delicate purplish flowers, further enhancing its appeal.
