Kuhli Loach

Kuhli Loach(Pangio semicincta) displays the classic Kuhli pattern — pale orange-pink to peach body with broad dark brown to black half-bands across the flanks.Pangio semicinctais now the accepted species for what was long sold asP. kuhlii— a taxonomic revision distinguished the two similar species. Kuhli Loaches are eel-like burrowing loaches from the heavily vegetated streams and forest pools of Southeast Asia — nocturnal, social, and endlessly fascinating. Their sinuous movement, burrowing behavior, and tendency to squeeze into impossibly small spaces make them one of the most entertaining bottom-dwelling community fish available.

Feeding & Care Tip:Hikari Sinking WafersandSera Viformo Nature Bottom Feeder Tabletsmake excellent staples — place them near the substrate after lights out when Kuhli Loaches are most active. Supplement 2–3× per week withHikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried BloodwormsorHikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Tubifex Worms. Feed after lights dim — these are nocturnal fish that emerge most actively after dark.

Kuhli Loaches require fine, smooth sand substrate — they burrow constantly and sharp gravel damages their sensitive barbels and skin. Dense planting, caves, PVC tubes, and leaf litter provide the essential hiding spots this nocturnal species needs to feel secure. They are far more active and visible in groups. Keep a tight-fitting lid — Kuhli Loaches are expert escape artists.

Keep in groups of at least six — Kuhli Loaches are more active, visible, and healthy in groups. They are completely peaceful with all other community fish and are one of the best bottom-dwelling community fish available. Compatible with virtually any peaceful species that will not eat them.

Kuhli Loaches are egg-scatterers that occasionally breed in community aquariums, scattering bright green eggs among plant roots near the surface. The eggs and fry receive no parental care. Breeding is relatively rarely observed in community tanks but occurs more regularly in mature, densely planted setups with multiple fish.
