Kribensis

Kribensis(Pelvicachromis pulcher) is one of the most popular and widely kept dwarf cichlids in the hobby. Males are colorful with pink to red bellies and iridescent fin markings, while females — unusually for cichlids — are arguably more spectacular, with vivid purple-pink bellies that intensify dramatically when breeding. Peaceful, hardy, easy to breed, and endlessly entertaining.

Feeding & Care Tip:Hikari Micro Pelletsmake an excellent daily staple. Supplement 2–3× per week withHikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried BloodwormsorHikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimpto enhance coloration and trigger breeding behavior. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.

Kribensis are West African forest stream fish inhabiting soft, slightly acidic to neutral water — completely different from the hard alkaline requirements of Malawi and Tanganyika cichlids. A planted aquarium with soft slightly acidic to neutral water, driftwood, leaf litter, and caves creates the ideal environment. They are one of the most community-friendly cichlids available.

Keep as a pair. Provide flower pots, coconut shells, or purpose-made caves for spawning. Both parents guard eggs and fry with impressive dedication. Females turn intensely purple when brooding and will aggressively defend the cave against all comers including the male. A breeding pair in a planted aquarium is one of the most rewarding fishkeeping experiences.

Native to the coastal rivers of southern Nigeria, the Niger Delta region, and Cameroon. The species name pulcher means ‘beautiful’ in Latin. Kribensis is the ideal first cichlid — cave spawning, biparental care, fry guarding — without the aggression, size requirements, or demanding water chemistry of most cichlid groups.
