Kissing Gourami

Kissing Gourami(Helostoma temminkii) is one of the most recognizable and entertaining fish in the hobby — famous for the lip-to-lip ‘kissing’ behavior between fish that gave it its common name. Despite the romantic connotation, this behavior is actually a dominance display — two fish of similar size pressing lips and pushing against each other to establish hierarchy. It is a large, robust fish that is quite different from most other gouramis in biology and diet.

Feeding & Care Tip:Sera Vipan Tropical FlakesandHikari Micro Pelletsmake good daily staples — the Kissing Gourami is also a significant algae grazer and will rasp algae from glass and decorations. Supplement with blanched vegetables andHikari Mini Algae Wafers.Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried BloodwormsandHikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp2–3 times per week.

Native to slow-moving rivers, lakes, and swamps across Southeast Asia — Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and surrounding areas. An important food fish in Southeast Asia where it is farmed extensively. In the aquarium the pink or white captive-bred form is most commonly available. The wild-type is greenish-silver.

Keep in groups — the kissing behavior requires multiple fish to express naturally. The Kissing Gourami grows large and needs a spacious aquarium. It can be assertive with plants — may rasp and damage soft-leaved plants. Use robust plants or focus on hardscape. Compatible with similarly large, robust fish.

All gouramis possess a labyrinth organ — a specialized breathing structure above the gills that allows them to breathe atmospheric air directly from the surface. This adaptation evolved for life in oxygen-poor waters and means gouramis can survive in conditions that would stress most other fish. Always ensure unobstructed surface access — a tight-fitting lid with a small gap, or a covered aquarium, prevents the fish from breathing cold air which can cause respiratory issues. The Kissing Gourami does not build bubble nests like most gouramis — it is a free spawner that releases eggs into the water column with no parental care.
