Java Fern ‘Windelov’ is a popular variant of the Java Fern created by Tropica, and named after its founder Holger Windeløv.Microsorum pteropus is also known as the black root fern, step fern, or tiered fern. It is a hardy aquarium plant native to tropical and subtropical regions across Asia. Commonly found attached to rocks or wood in streams and waterfalls, Java Fern adapts well to diverse environments, even tolerating periods of drying out. This resilience makes it a favorite among aquarists. When used in aquascaping, it’s best to attach Java fern to wood or stone with fishing line or super glue gel, allowing it to anchor naturally without risk of root rot.
Java fern thrives in various aquarium conditions, from low to moderate light and in both freshwater and brackish setups. Propagation is simple—just split the rhizome or wait for new plants to sprout from the characteristic black spots (sporangia) under its leaves. These spots are reproductive organs, not signs of disease, often giving rise to new plants that detach and establish themselves. With its low-maintenance care and lush green aesthetic, Java fern is a versatile, easy-to-grow choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists alike.
