The Role of Copper (Cu) in Reef Systems

While copper is often associated with toxicity at high levels, it remains a vital trace element necessary for several enzymatic and metabolic functions in a marine aquarium.

• Biological Catalyst:Copper acts as a key co-factor in various enzymes. It is essential for processes such as iron utilization in fish and certain pathways in calcium metabolism.

• Precise Balancing:In a reef aquarium, copper should only be present in extremely low, detectable concentrations. Because the line between deficiency and toxicity is thin, high-purity laboratory solutions are essential for safe adjustment.

• Normal Conditions:Low copper levels are the standard in reef tanks. Supplementation is typically only required when an ICP analysis shows levels have dropped below the necessary biological threshold.
