Hygrophila odora is a rare and visually striking aquarium plant native to Western Africa, making it the first Hygrophila species endemic to Africa to enter the aquarium hobby. Previously known as Hygrophila sp. ‘Guinea’ or Hygrophila sp. ‘Afrika,’ this unique species was formally identified in 2009. In its submerged aquarium form, Hygrophila odora develops narrow, finely divided light green leaves on sturdy stems, creating an elegant, feathery appearance that adds movement and texture to planted aquariums. Its foliage is more slender than Hygrophila difformis and offers a refined, architectural look that stands out beautifully in the background of larger aquascapes.
Best suited for experienced aquarists, Hygrophila odora thrives under strong lighting, soft water conditions, and consistent CO₂ supplementation. A nutrient-rich environment with ample macro- and micronutrients, especially sufficient phosphate levels, supports healthy growth and prevents deficiencies. Warmer water temperatures above 26 °C (79 °F) further encourage robust development. Growth ranges from slow to moderately fast depending on conditions, and propagation is easily achieved through top or side cuttings. When provided with optimal care, Hygrophila odora becomes a dramatic and exotic statement plant, ideal for high-energy planted tanks and nature-style aquariums seeking something truly uncommon.
