Hydrocotyle verticillata is a distinctive aquatic plant native to the warmer regions of the Americas, thriving in moist soils and shallow waters. Unlike the more common Hydrocotyle leucocephala, this species features small, umbrella-like leaves without a central notch, giving it a unique appearance. In aquariums, its growth is highly influenced by light intensity—the stronger the light, the more compact it remains. While it has minimal nutrient and CO2 requirements, maintaining a balanced supply of both promotes healthy development. However, excessive nutrients can lead to larger leaf growth, reducing the desirable dwarf-like form many aquarists seek.
A key difference from H. leucocephala is its creeping, carpet-forming growth habit when submerged. Its runners spread along the substrate, creating a lush, low-growing foreground that enhances aquascapes. Regular trimming with sharp scissors helps maintain its shape and prevent overgrowth. Thanks to its unique parasol-like foliage and ability to form a dense, green carpet, H. verticillata is an excellent choice for foreground placement in both large and small aquariums. In nano tanks, it works well as an accent plant, adding texture and visual interest to the layout.
