Hawaiian Variatus Platy

Hawaiian Variatus Platy(Xiphophorus variatus) is aXiphophorus variatuswith vivid Hawaiian-inspired coloration — warm sunset tones of orange, red, and yellow in a multi-color arrangement reminiscent of tropical island colors. The Variatus Platy is a distinct species from the Southern Platy — slightly larger, with more natural color variation, and notably more tolerant of cooler temperatures. Ideal for unheated aquariums and outdoor tub ponds in temperate climates.

Feeding & Care Tip:Sera Vipan Tropical FlakesandHikari Mini Algae Wafersmake excellent daily staples — platys have a strong herbivorous lean and the algae wafers reflect their natural diet. Supplement 2–3× per week withHikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp,Hikari Frozen Daphnia, orHikari Vibra Bites. For fry,Sera Micron Fry Foodis an ideal first food.

Native to rivers of Mexico — particularly the Río Pánuco drainage in eastern Mexico.Xiphophorus variatusis a distinct species from the standard Southern Platy, slightly larger, with more variable and complex natural coloration — the species namevariatus(‘variable’) reflects the wide natural color variation in wild fish. The Variatus Platy is somewhat hardier and more tolerant of cooler temperatures thanX. maculatus.

Keep in groups. Keeptwo females for every male— male platys are persistently amorous and individual females will be harassed constantly without sufficient companions to distribute male attention. Compatible with virtually all small, peaceful community fish. Platys prefer hard, slightly alkaline water — they do better in harder water than in soft, acidic conditions, making them excellent choices for hard-water community aquariums.

Platys are prolific livebearers — a single female produces 20–80 fry every 4–6 weeks. Females retain sperm, so a single mating results in multiple successive broods. Dense planting provides cover for fry.Sera Micron Fry Foodis an excellent first food for newborn platys, which can graduate to crushed flake within a few weeks.
