TheFritz Phosphate Test Kitmeasures phosphate (PO4) levels in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums using a simple two-reagent colorimetric test. Phosphate is one of the most important parameters to track in reef tanks and planted aquariums — elevated PO4 fuels nuisance algae blooms and can inhibit coral growth, while extremely low levels can starve photosynthetic corals and aquatic plants.

FAQ

How often should I test phosphate?
Reef tanks: weekly. Planted freshwater: every 1–2 weeks. Community freshwater: monthly or when troubleshooting algae.

What causes high phosphate in an aquarium?
Common sources include overfeeding, decaying fish food, fish waste, dying plant matter, tap water with phosphates, and low-quality salt mixes.

My corals look pale — could phosphate be the problem?
Yes. Phosphate that is too low (essentially zero) can starve zooxanthellae and bleach corals. Both extremes are harmful — most reef tanks do best with a small, measurable PO4 reading.

Can I use this kit in both freshwater and saltwater?
Yes — this Fritz kit is designed for both. Just rinse the vial thoroughly between samples.
