Overview

The ECC Slightly Sinister Favia Frag features bright purple mouths surrounded by lime green rings and a blue outer ring on the polyp. Like most encrusting LPS, it benefits from a little space to grow and occasional feedings to support color and growth. With stable water conditions and a touch of patience, this coral will gradually build out into a wonderful colony.

Water Parameters

Corals thrive in stable water conditions with regular water changes. Corals with a hard skeleton, like this one, will consume calcium and alkalinity as they grow, often requiring additional supplementation. Routine water testing helps ensure these needs are consistently met.

  • Specific Gravity (Salinity):1.025-1.026
  • Temperature:75-78 Degrees F
  • pH:8.1-8.4

Lighting Requirements

This Favia coral prefers moderate-light areas of the aquarium, ideally in the 75-250 PAR range. While it can adapt to a range of lighting conditions, gradual acclimation is always best practice.

For those with mixed reef tanks, a PAR meter is invaluable for fine-tuning light levels across different corals, helping ensure each coral gets the right intensity for its needs.

Ideal Tank Placement

Favia corals are most often placed on rockwork, away from fast-growing or highly aggressive corals. It does well in mid to lower areas in the tank where lighting is stable and flow is gentle.

Water Flow Requirements

Low to moderate flow is ideal. Adequate water movement helps keep detritus from settling on its surface and encourages healthy tissue expansion.

Aggressiveness and Compatibility

Favia corals are semi-aggressive, and should not be placed where it is in direct contact with neighboring corals. It may extend sweeper tentacles at night, so provide enough space to prevent tissue damage to nearby corals.

Feeding and Nutrition

This coral primarily relies on photosynthesis for energy, but will benefit from occasional target feeding with small meaty foods or powdered coral blends such as Reef Chili. Supplementing with amino acids like CoralAmino can also support polyp health and coloration.

Growth Rate and Pattern

Favia are steady growers and have a flat, encrusting growth pattern. Over time, it will expand across rock surfaces while developing tightly packed, colorful polyps.

Acclimation Process

Acclimation is essential for corals to adjust to their new environment. For a full step-by-step process, refer to our Coral Acclimation Guide.
