Dwarf Sagittaria

Dwarf Sagittaria, botanically Sagittaria subulata sabulata, is one of the most adaptable and practically useful foreground plants in the planted aquarium hobby — a fast-spreading North American plant that shoots runners rapidly to form dense mats of narrow, grass-like leaves across the foreground and into the midground. Its exceptional adaptability to a wide pH range including alkaline water makes it the natural foreground choice for community tanks where typical planted aquarium species might struggle.

Care tip:Dwarf Sagittaria grows best in moderate lighting with CO₂ not required. Maintain temperatures of 68–80°F and pH 6.0–8.0. Regular fertilization supports healthy growth.

Growing to 4 to 12 inches depending on lighting, Dwarf Sagittaria’s height is notably responsive to conditions — growing taller in lower light as it reaches toward the surface, and staying shorter and more compact under stronger light. The fast, vigorous runner production makes it one of the quickest-establishing foreground plants available, filling foreground zones rapidly once established.

This easy plant requires no CO₂ supplementation and grows in moderate lighting. The exceptional pH range of 6.0 to 8.0 and broad temperature tolerance of 68 to 80°F make it the most adaptable foreground grass plant available. Regular fertilization maintains healthy, vigorous runner production. In tanks where hairgrass would struggle without perfect conditions, Dwarf Sagittaria thrives reliably.

In the aquascape, Dwarf Sagittaria creates fast, reliable, grass-like foreground to midground coverage that suits a range of planted aquarium styles from casual community tanks to more structured planted layouts. The fast runner production quickly establishes an attractive, natural grass coverage. In alkaline and hard water aquariums it is frequently the only reliable foreground grass plant available.

Dwarf Sagittaria is the most adaptable and practically accessible foreground grass plant in the hobby — fast, easy, and reliable across the widest range of aquarium conditions. Its exceptional pH tolerance and fast runner production make it an indispensable foreground plant for community tanks and aquariums with varying water chemistry.
