Diamond Tetra

Diamond Tetra(Moenkhausia pittieri) is frequently described as the most beautiful tetra when seen in person — a claim that photographs consistently fail to support because the beauty is structural rather than pigment-based. Every scale of an adult male reflects light independently, creating a full-body iridescent sparkle that shifts from silver to gold to green with each movement and light angle. Named for Swiss naturalist Henri François Pittier who spent decades cataloguing Venezuela’s biodiversity.

Feeding & Care Tip:Sera Vipan Tropical FlakesandHikari Micro Pelletsmake excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week withHikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms,Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp, orHikari Vibra Bites. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.

Native to Lake Valencia and its tributary streams in Carabobo state, Venezuela — a large, isolated lake system severely impacted by pollution and introduced species. The Diamond Tetra is one of the more threatened commonly kept tetras in its wild habitat, making captive-bred aquarium stock the primary population for the species. Males develop elongated dorsal and anal fin extensions and violet iridescence when in full breeding condition.

Keep in groups of at least 6. Dim to moderate lighting and a dark background bring out the maximum sparkle effect. Males in breeding condition with full fin extensions are genuinely spectacular.

A moderately hardy tetra more adaptable in terms of water parameters than many Venezuelan species — Lake Valencia is a larger, more stable body of water than the blackwater streams that produce most aquarium tetras.
