Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Mi Oya’ is a striking variety of C. wendtii, distinguished by its rich reddish-brown, textured leaves. Native to the warm waters of the Mi Oya River in Sri Lanka, this plant is less commonly found in the aquarium trade. It was first introduced commercially by Tropica, making it a prized choice for aquarists looking to add a unique, natural aesthetic to their tanks.

Growing Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Mi Oya’ is relatively simple, especially when provided with a nutrient-rich substrate to support healthy development. Lighting intensity significantly influences its growth pattern—under strong light, the leaves spread out horizontally, while in lower light, they grow more upright. Unlike many Cryptocorynes, this variety is highly resilient and does not experience the common “Crypt melt.” It thrives without CO2 supplementation, making it an excellent option for low-tech aquariums.

This adaptable species can also be grown emersed with ease, requiring only nutrient-rich soil and high humidity. Propagation occurs naturally through runners, continuously producing new plantlets that can be transplanted as needed. Due to its larger size compared to other C. wendtii varieties, Mi Oya is best suited for midground to background placement in smaller aquariums, where its bold coloration and structured growth create an eye-catching focal point.
