Cryptocoryne ‘Sri Lanka’ is a distinctive and less common species of Cryptocoryne, originating from the limestone-rich, fast-flowing rivers of Sri Lanka. To thrive in an aquarium, this plant requires a calcium-rich environment along with essential nutrients such as CO2, phosphate, iron, and nitrate. As a root-feeding plant, it benefits greatly from regular supplementation with root tabs. While it adapts well to submerged growth, it can also grow emersed and may even produce delicate flowers above the water’s surface. This versatile plant can be anchored in the substrate or attached to rocks and driftwood using cotton thread or fishing line.
Like all Cryptocoryne species, this plant is sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters and may experience “crypt melt” when introduced to a new environment. If melting occurs, trimming away affected leaves and maintaining stable water conditions will encourage recovery and new growth. It also prefers moderate to low lighting, as excessive light can contribute to leaf deterioration.
Cryptocoryne ‘Sri Lanka’ propagates naturally through runners, which can be separated and replanted for fuller coverage. For best results, space individual stems about an inch apart, ensuring roots have proper access to nutrients. Whether used as a foreground or midground plant, this crypt brings a lush, natural aesthetic to freshwater aquascapes.
