Canary Blenny
The Canary Blenny (Meiacanthus oualanensis) is a popular fish for saltwater aquariums. Here are some things to know about keeping and caring for them:
Size and Appearance
The Canary Blenny can grow up to 4 inches in length and has a bright yellow body with black spotting throughout. They also have two long, pointed fangs in their lower jaw which they use for self-defense.
Behavior
Canary Blennies are known for being highly territorial and aggressive towards other blennies or similar looking fish. They are also known to nip at the fins of larger fish. However, they are generally peaceful towards other non-competing species and can do well in a community aquarium.
Diet
Canary Blennies are omnivores and will eat a variety of foods including brine shrimp, frozen or live mysis shrimp, and other small meaty foods. They will also graze on algae in the aquarium.
Compatibility
Canary Blennies are best kept in a tank with plenty of hiding places and rockwork. They can be kept with other peaceful fish, but should not be kept with other blennies or similarly shaped fish.
Coolest Stuff
- Their fangs contain venom which they use as a defense mechanism against predators.
- They are considered a “reef safe” fish and will not harm coral or other invertebrates.
- Male Canary Blennies are known to dig burrows in the sand or among rockwork to attract females during breeding season.
