Bucephalandra Velvet

Bucephalandra Velvetis a beautiful and aptly named variety whose deep green leaves carry a soft, velvety surface texture with a subtle shimmer that gives the plant a luxurious, tactile quality unique among Bucephalandra. The combination of the deep green color and the velvet-like leaf surface creates a plant of quiet elegance — consistently one of the most pleasing and refined to keep and display.

Planting tip:Bucephalandra Velvet can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate, as this will cause rot. If attaching to hardscape, use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.

As a Bornean species from Indonesia, Velvet can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface or attached to driftwood or stone at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome. This easy to moderate difficulty variety grows well in low to moderate lighting without requiring CO₂ supplementation. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 suit this plant well. Like all Bucephalandra, Velvet can produce small, delicate white flowers both underwater and above the waterline.

Growing to 2 to 4 inches, Velvet is versatile for foreground and attached hardscape placement in tanks of many sizes. Regular liquid fertilization supports the health and depth of color in the velvety leaves. Good water flow benefits this plant and helps prevent algae from settling on the textured leaf surface.

In the aquascape, Bucephalandra Velvet works beautifully alongside other textured plants and on natural driftwood where the velvety surface quality is most visible. The deep green and subtle shimmer make it an excellent companion for more colorful Bucephalandra varieties — it provides a rich, calm green foundation against which more colorful or iridescent specimens stand out. Shrimp are particularly drawn to the velvety leaf surface for grazing.

Bucephalandra Velvet is a plant of refined elegance — deep, soft, and quietly beautiful in any planted aquarium.
