Bucephalandra pygmaea ‘Bukit Kelam’

Bucephalandra pygmaea ‘Bukit Kelam’is a geographically specific variety identified by its collection location on Bukit Kelam — a prominent granite monolith in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. This regional identification gives the plant a botanical authenticity and provenance that appeals strongly to collectors and biotope aquarists who value knowing exactly where their plants originate.

Planting tip:Bucephalandra pygmaea ‘Bukit Kelam’ can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface, or attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape at any position in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome under substrate, as this will cause rot. If attaching to hardscape, use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.

As a true pygmaea-type Bucephalandra from Indonesia, Bukit Kelam can be planted with the rhizome resting at the substrate surface or attached to hardscape at any height in the aquarium. Never fully bury the rhizome. This easy-care variety grows well in low to moderate lighting with optional CO₂ supplementation. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 provide comfortable growing conditions. Like all Bucephalandra, Bukit Kelam can produce small, delicate white flowers both underwater and above the waterline.

Growing to 1 to 2 inches, this compact variety is best suited to nano aquascapes and detailed foreground work in larger tanks. Regular liquid fertilization supports healthy growth. Stable conditions are important for all locality-specific Bucephalandra varieties.

In the aquascape, Bucephalandra pygmaea ‘Bukit Kelam’ is most meaningful when used in biotope or nature-inspired compositions that reference the river habitats of Indonesia. Its small size and compact growth make it ideal for creating naturalistic rocky streambed foregrounds where the plant appears as it would in its wild habitat. For collectors, the Bukit Kelam designation adds a layer of botanical narrative that enriches the aquarium’s story.

Bucephalandra pygmaea ‘Bukit Kelam’ is a plant with a story as interesting as its appearance. Compact, authentic, and deeply rewarding for the botanically-minded aquarist.
