Bubble Coral (Plerogyra sinuosa)
The Bubble Coral is one of the most unique and recognizable LPS corals in the reef aquarium hobby. Famous for its large, inflated bubble-like vesicles, this fascinating coral creates an appearance unlike almost any other coral available. During the day, the coral expands its signature bubbles, creating a soft, flowing display that adds texture, movement, and visual interest to any reef aquarium.
Bubble Corals are highly prized for their unusual appearance and relatively manageable care requirements. Their inflated tissue helps maximize light exposure while creating a dramatic focal point within the aquarium. Under reef lighting, Bubble Corals can display beautiful shades of green, white, cream, and subtle fluorescent highlights that become even more striking under blue-spectrum LEDs.
This coral thrives in areas of low to moderate water flow and moderate lighting. Because its delicate bubbles can be damaged by strong currents or aggressive tankmates, placement in a protected area of the aquarium is recommended. At night, Bubble Corals often extend long feeding tentacles to capture food from the water column and should be given adequate space from neighboring corals.
