Black Tiger Badis

Black Tiger Badis(Dario tigris) is a striking species from Myanmar with a bold, graphic pattern that justifies every word of its common name. Males display a black to dark charcoal body crossed by vivid vertical orange-gold to yellow bands — a tiger-stripe pattern in miniature that is extraordinary for a fish of this size. Iridescent blue-green highlights in the fins and on the face add further visual complexity. It is slightly more robust than the Scarlet Badis and shares the stronger feeding response of the Flame Red Badis.

Feeding & Care Tip:Hikari Micro PelletsandHikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimpare the daily staples. Supplement withHikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Tubifex WormsandHikari Frozen Daphnia2–3× per week.Newly hatched live baby brine shrimpare an excellent treat for conditioning and triggering peak coloration and breeding. Feed in a calm tank — slow, deliberate feeder.

Native to clear, slow-moving streams and pools in Myanmar. This species inhabits areas with dense aquatic vegetation, leaf litter, and fine substrate — typical Dario habitat. In the aquarium, a nano planted setup with Indian almond leaves, Java moss, fine-leaved plants, and very gentle filtration produces the richest black-and-gold tiger coloration.

Keep one male per tank or per defined territory. Males are territorial and will display aggressively to rivals — the black-and-gold coloration intensifies dramatically during territorial interactions, making this one of the most visually spectacular Dario species to observe when displaying. Despite their micro-predator status, Dario species can coexist peacefully with carefully chosen tankmates. Small, fast-moving nano rasboras occupy different water zones and move too quickly to be threatened. Planted shrimp tanks also work well — adult shrimp are generally safe, but be aware that Dario species may prey on very small baby shrimp. Avoid any active feeders that will outcompete these slow, deliberate fish for food.

Egg-scatterer with no parental care — spawns among fine vegetation. The Black Tiger Badis is a genuine standout in the Dario genus: the tiger stripe pattern is bolder and more graphic than most relatives, and combined with the blue-green fin iridescence, creates one of the most uniquely beautiful nano fish available. The critical feeding challenge with Dario species is their small mouth, slow feeding pace, and preference for moving food. Always feed in a calm aquarium and observe that all fish are actually eating — fast tankmates will steal food before Darios can respond.
