Bacopa caroliniana, a popular choice among aquarists for many years, originates from the marshes of the southeastern United States. Known for its adaptability, this versatile stem plant can thrive both submerged and emersed, with various forms available, including smaller-leaved and variegated types. One of its distinctive features is the lemon scent emitted by the leaves when crushed, which also makes it unpalatable to plant-eating goldfish.

This slow-growing plant requires plenty of light (at least 0.5 watts per liter) to maintain its vibrant colors. Under intense light and low nitrate levels, Bacopa caroliniana can develop a bronze to brownish hue, while low phosphate levels may give it a slight pink tinge. Emersed growth in temperate climates is also possible during warm seasons, where it can spread rapidly, forming a ground-covering habit with a hairy stalk and producing characteristic purple flowers.

Propagation of Bacopa caroliniana is straightforward. Simply cut the top or lateral shoots and replant them, or remove and replant the runners that form at the stem bases. Its ease of care and adaptability make it an excellent addition to any aquarium or garden pond, providing both beauty and functionality.
