Anubias hastifolia

Anubias hastifoliais one of the larger Anubias species, producing broad, hastate — arrowhead-shaped — leaves that can grow impressively in a well-maintained aquarium, reaching 12 to 16 inches in height. The large arrowhead leaf shape, with characteristic ear-like lobes at the base, gives this species a bold, sculptural quality. The care chart notes that it can grow both emersed and submerged, making it a uniquely versatile species for aquariums, paludariums, and wet terrariums.

Planting tip:Never bury the rhizome in substrate — Anubias hastifolia should always be attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape with the rhizome fully exposed. Use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.

As with all Anubias, hastifolia is a robust and undemanding plant in terms of care. Low lighting is sufficient, CO₂ supplementation needs are low, and the plant tolerates a broad range of water conditions including temperatures from 72 to 82°F and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5. Regular liquid fertilization is particularly beneficial to support healthy, vigorous growth of the large leaves. Good water circulation helps prevent algae buildup on the broad leaf surfaces.

Anubias hastifolia must be planted with the rhizome attached to hardscape and kept fully exposed above the substrate. The large size of this species means it benefits from substantial pieces of driftwood or rock where the impressive leaves have adequate space to spread.

In the aquascape, Anubias hastifolia is most effective in larger tanks where its substantial leaf size can be properly appreciated as a background plant. It pairs well with other large-leaved species, tall background stem plants, and bold hardscape elements like large boulders and substantial driftwood. A magnificent species for aquarists who want to make a bold statement.
