Anubias barteri var. nana ‘Petite’, also known as ‘Bonsai’, is the smallest Anubias variety in the aquarium trade, known for its compact size and slow growth. Its origins are debated, with some sources suggesting it comes from Cameroon, while others indicate it emerged as a mutation in Singapore. Despite its higher price, ‘Petite’ is prized for its hardy nature, making it ideal for aquascapers seeking a low-maintenance, long-lasting plant.
This miniature version of Anubias barteri var. nana features upward-growing rhizomes and downward-bent, light to medium green leaves. The leaves typically reach about 1 inch in length, with a width of ½ inch. Anubias ‘Petite’ is ideal for the foreground or mid-ground of nano aquariums and small aquascapes. It can be planted in the substrate or attached to rocks and driftwood, but care should be taken not to bury the rhizome to prevent rot. Though this variety rarely flowers in aquariums, maintaining high phosphate levels (1.5-2 mg/l) and proper nutrient supply helps prevent algae growth under strong light.
This versatile, hardy plant adds a touch of elegance to any aquarium setup, making it perfect for aquarists of all levels. Its slow growth and small size make it a standout choice for detailed, compact aquascaping.
