Anubias afzeliiis a distinct West African species within the Anubias genus, growing to an impressive 12 to 16 inches and recognized by its larger leaves held on long petioles. The care chart notes it as a large-leaf variety that should be attached to hardscape with the rhizome kept unburied — a reminder that despite its impressive size it follows the same fundamental care requirements as all Anubias species. Medium lighting is recommended, slightly higher than many other Anubias varieties.

Planting tip:Never bury the rhizome in substrate — Anubias afzelii should always be attached to driftwood, rock, or other hardscape with the rhizome fully exposed. Use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time.

Care for Anubias afzelii is as straightforward as any member of the genus. Medium lighting supports the best growth at this scale, CO₂ supplementation is not required, and the plant thrives in temperatures between 72 and 82°F with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. Regular liquid fertilization supports the production of large, healthy leaves on the long, graceful petioles. Growth is slow, as is typical of Anubias, but steady and reliable.

Anubias afzelii should be attached to driftwood or stone with the rhizome kept fully exposed. The long-petioled large leaves display beautifully when the plant is attached to vertical wood or angled rock formations where the foliage spreads outward and downward in a natural, flowing arrangement.
