Alternanthera reineckii ‘Pink’ is a striking aquatic plant with vibrant red and purple hues. Originating from South America, where it thrives along riversides in periodically flooded areas, this plant has been cultivated since its introduction to the Netherlands in 1965. A. reineckii is one of the few species in the genus Alternanthera that can grow entirely submersed, making it popular in aquascaping. Known for its ease of care, it is a favored choice in Dutch-style aquariums for adding bold color contrasts.
While A. reineckii ‘Pink’ can survive in low light and without CO2 supplementation, it flourishes best under medium to high light (0.4-1 watt per liter) and nutrient-rich conditions. CO2 injection, and fertilization with high nitrate (10 mg/l and above) and phosphates (0.5 mg/l and above) significantly enhances its growth and vibrant coloration. In low light, the plant may shed its lower leaves, but proper spacing and propagation by cuttings help maintain its bushy appearance. Its purple leaf undersides create a stunning contrast to green plants, making it an excellent choice for background accents in aquariums.
